2002 Golf Mk4 GT TDi PD150 Westward Engineering -Tuning Box

Power: 197bhp
Torque: 3271b.ft 0-60mph: 8.73-seconds
Top speed: 129.26mph
Smoke level: zero

Winning the award for furthest travelled', the Westward Engineering guys trekked all the way over from Enfield, County Meath in Ireland with their dark blue, three-door 150,

Martin Tracy explained that aside from a plug in 'Tuning-Box' ECU and d K&N panel filter it was totally standard, and had been that way for some 40,000 trouble free mites. The box plugs directly into the injector socket loom - just requiring a battery feed - so it only takes five minutes to fit.

The results are a huge Improvement, with Westward quoting 197bhp and 327lb. ft of twist. It works too. Quelling wheelspin from the Michelins proved difficult, with the car pulling hard from 3200 to 4500rpm, although peak torque is at 2500rpm. Aliard racecar aside, it clocked the highest top speed on the day, and Martin reckoned that despite the damp conditions the 60mph dash would be quicker by using less revs and relying on the torque.

Developed by Hamman Tuning in Belgium, Westward is the distributor for both Eire and the UK and has sold hundreds of them over the last six years. Al! VAG applications (including the Golf Mk.5) are catered for, priced from 550 euros as a mail order DIY fitment.
